OUR COMMITTMENT
Enduring sustainability and carbon neutrality
Our dedication to the environment drives us to prioritise organic growing methods and to continually seek out improved eco-friendly practices. This dedication isn’t just how we cultivate our table grapes; it’s how we nurture our business. By repurposing wine grape vineyards by reusing infrastructure and, as we progress, implementing a plan to graft our varieties onto existing rootstock, we’re reducing waste and preserving valuable resources. With every step, we honour the traditions of the past while pioneering new paths for future generations.
- Soil: The natural fertility of our Bridge Pa, Hawke's Bay soils mean we can farm with minimal intervention to achieve perfection.
- Water: The renowned aquifer Heretaunga aquifer is the life-blood of horticulture in the Hawke's Bay region and supplies all our water requirements sustainably. Our irrigation is carefully calibrated to ensure the vines achieve just the right amount of water to ensure this precious resource is not wasted.
- Power: Electricity drives our business. Electric carts take our workers around our vineyards and we use EVs as our daily runabouts. The electricity that drives our vehicles and our irrigation is derived from New Zealand's world-famous renewable energy resources.
- Packaging: Our grapes need to be fully protected during transport and to do that we have sourced padding made from sheep wool, a product that is sustainable and reusable.
- UV vine treatment: To move beyond organic spraying, we are trialing UV vine treatment to eliminate the majority of our chemical disease control and further reduce the carbon and energy intensity of our business.
- Trellis: We go to great lengths to repurpose existing winegrape structures for our vineyards. For new developments, we use only concrete and steel posts, for long-lasting structures that avoid soil contamination.
